November 2017 Case of the Month
Monday, November 6, 2017

This is a middle-aged man who presented with severe back and leg pains related to a high-grade spondylolisthesis (a slipped vertebra) and degeneration of multiple discs with compression of nerve roots (Figure-1). He underwent an oblique lateral approach to replace disc with cages through small abdominal incisions. Another cage was drilled through the high-grade offset vertebra to render it more stable. (Figure-2 a+b) Screws and rods were inserted for added stability (Figure 3 (a+b). Surgery was performed using minimal invasive approaches. Patient did very well after surgery. Patient ambulated the first day after surgery and was discharged home 2 days later. The use of such a cage in a high-grade spondylolisthesis is a novel approach and is one of the several procedures that Dr. Taha has innovated and mastered.
