Understanding Acupuncture
Tuesday, May 1, 2018

This ancient, more than three thousand years old medical treatment is known to relieve pain and is still practiced today. This unorthodox treatment is generally accepted medically and endorsed by the U.S. National Institutes of Health (NIH). According to researchers acupuncture not only alleviates pain but also has several other health benefits.

What is Acupuncture?

Acupuncture is done by inserting extremely thin, carefully designed sterilized needles at precise and specific points around the body at various depths. Acupuncture is used for stimulating the nerves and the blood flow around the body. The needles are inserted in the acupuncture points by the expert. Acupuncture points are the specific points on a body where nerves, muscles and connective tissue are to be stirred. The stimulation will increase the blood flow, while simultaneously activating natural painkillers by the body. Acupuncture along with other, more orthodox and traditional treatments can speed up the healing of the body.

According to some researchers acupuncture triggers a certain biochemical reaction that lowers inflammation and swelling in the muscles and relieves pain. And another German research suggests that acupuncture can improve and reduce migraines and other stress related headaches.

There are experts who argue that there is not much evidence to support how acupuncture exactly works. But even they do not completely deny that acupuncture does exhibit benefits.

Benefits of Acupuncture

There are plenty of benefits of acupuncture and the most prominent and common use for acupuncture is to reduce and alleviate pains.
The National Center for Complementary and Integrative Health (NCCIH), has listed the following proven benefits of acupuncture:
  • Back pain was improved by acupuncture
  • Pains in the neck were also lessened
  • Knee pains and other joint pains were also eased
  • Migraine and head ache were also reduced after patients received acupuncture treatments

The WHO also has researched and found out further proven benefits of acupuncture. The following issues and conditions were effectively improved by acupuncture:
  • Blood pressure issues
  • Nausea and vomiting especially after chemotherapy
  • Indigestion and gastric issues
  • Painful periods
  • Sinuses and other similar issues
  • Pain in the face, teeth and gums
  • Pregnancy related morning sickness and also eased labor
  • Rheumatoid arthritis
  • Pain in the limbs and joints
  • Reducing the danger of stroke
There are several other benefits that have been observed and noted but some need further investigation and scientific evidence.

Acupuncture is also beneficial in cases where pain killers are not suitable for the patient. As mentioned earlier, acupuncture can also easily be combined with other treatment methods. Acupuncture has little to no side effects.

The benefits of acupuncture can be completely realized if they are done by a professional licensed doctor under hygienic and safe conditions.
